A Foundation for Youth

"We believe that young people have the power to make change in their communities. Our vision is that every young person has access to the knowledge, tools and resources to engage their families, friends, classmates, and neighbors in the progressive movement. Education is a crucial tool to make our vision a reality. We envision a country where everyone, no matter his or her immigration status, no matter his or her socio-economic status, has the right to dream and be part of a community. "-A.F.F.Y

A Foundation For Youth was started in 2008. Sonia and Silvia (founders of the program) wanted to engage immigrant youth in a summer program where they would feel part of a community, where art/politics and education was mixed in workshops and enabled their growth in leadership and be empowered.

In 2008 A Foundation For Youth (A.F.F.Y) launched their Annual Artist F-Our Blueprint Event that consist of different emcees, spoken word artist that show their love and support for immigrant youth.

In 2009 A.F.F.Y was launched. Its first summer running engaged over 15 girls from International High school (in Queens) in variety of summer workshops and activities. They engaged in workshops that taught them about immigrant youth movement, social awareness, political awareness, jewelry making, and the importance of college.

Furthermore, they found a voice through their daily journal entry and round table discussion of topics that dwell into body issues and self esteem. In addition to the workshops we engaged them in trips such as bike riding, which for some of us was our first time bike riding but it was our first time peddling into a new bright future.

A.F.FY continues to serve immigrant youth and seeks to engage a new group in their summer program.
